David Archuleta

Life Before American Idol

David Archuleta was born on December 28, 1990 in Miami, Florida and is the second of five children. His father Jeff once worked as a jazz musician and his mother Lupe was once a jazz singer and dancer. With those kind of genes, Archuleta was bound to lean toward the entertainment industry and he did, beginning at the age of six.

The very young David Archuleta claims that he got his musical inspiration from the musical Les Miserables when he was six. He also claims that his mom would make him sing and dance with his sisters and that he was greatly influenced by Latin jazz music. Archuleta wouldn't take the stage though, until his family moved from Miami to Utah.

Searching for the Next Big Star

Before American Idol, shows like Star Search and The Mickey Mouse Club were ratings winners. When David Archuleta was 12, his parents entered him in the Star Search competition where he would end up winning the $25,000 prize in the junior division in 2003.

Other Performances

Archuleta also performed on many local shows in Utah as well as on the long since canceled Jenny Jones show, singing And I am Telling You from the movie that brought former Idol contestant Jennifer Hudson her first Oscar, Dreamgirls.

Fame Finds David Archuleta

In 2007, American Idol began it's holding open auditions in cities all across the States. Archuleta tried out at the San Diego auditions where he impressed the judges and received his ticket to Hollywood.

Idol Controversies

David's father Jeff was much criticized (and often skewered) by the public for being a stereotypical "stage parent". During the course of the show, the camera would always, inevitably pan on the elder Archuleta and there were rumors running about that he was even once removed from the Idol set. David has come out in defense of his father explaining that since he was a minor, a parent had to be there. The second controversy was much less talked about and involves his cover of John Lennon's Imagine.

After singing Imagine, judge Randy Jackson asked David why he skipped the first verse. Archuleta responded that he chose the second verse because it had such a "great message." L.A. Times reporters believed that Archuleta, who is a Mormon, skipped the first verse due to its opening agnostic lyric, Imagine there's no heaven."

Everyone knows that it was David Cook and not Archuleta that was crowned the 2008 winner of American Idol, but Archuleta found his own measure of success, signing a recording contract with Jive Records. David's self-titled debut album was released on November 11, 2008. The first single from the album Crush debuted at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. The album itself peaked at number two on Billboard 200 charts.
