About Coldplay

Coldplay formed during the band’s college years at University College London. Initially, the band called themselves Pectoralz, though they soon renamed themselves Starfish. They hit the London club circuit in the late 1990s, and eventually they renamed themselves Coldplay and signed to well respected indie label Fierce Panda, with whom they released the Brothers and Sisters EP.

It didn’t take the majors long to discover Coldplay, and Parlophone soon swooped in and signed the band to a five album deal. During this period, the band nearly split over disagreements in how to split profits, but eventually they settled on an equal split between all members and put their differences aside.

Their first album, Parachutes, came out in 1999, but it didn’t really make a splash until the single Yellow was released in summer of 2000.

Since that time, Coldplay has experienced ever increasing success with each release, and they are now one of the top earning bands around – both in terms of sales and tours.

The major label Coldplay discography is as follows:

  • Parachutes
  • A Rush of Blood to the Head
  • X&Y
  • Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends

Coldplay Activism

Coldplay is well known for their social activism, especially in fair trade campaigns, and they give 10% of their earnings to charitable causes. Chris Martin, Coldplay singer, has been a vocal supporter of Oxfam and their fair trade work in particular. They are also known for their refusal to allow their music to be used in advertising (with the recent exception of an iTunes commercial). The band has reportedly turned down millions of dollars several times because they do not want their songs to be used in TV advertising campaigns.
