Colbie Caillat

About Colbie Callait

It really comes as no surprise that Colbie Caillat got into music at a young age, given the fact that her father Ken Caillat is a music producer and co-produced Fleetwood Mac's Grammy award winning album Rumours, among others. Colbie spent her childhood in Malibu, California where her home was visited often by musicians such as Mick Fleetwood and John McVie. Being from such a musically inclined family, Colbie began taking piano lessons at a young age but quickly lost interest. It wasn't until the age of 11 when she would find her inspiration in Lauryn Hill.

Colbie had seen Lauryn Hill in the film Sister Act 2, but it was Hill's remake of the Roberta Flack song Killing Me Softly that piqued Colbie's interest in singing and songwriting. Her parents, realizing that their daughter was serious, enrolled Colbie in voice lessons where she met her current producer Mikal Blue. The partnership between Caillat and Blue grew and the two, along with Jason Reeves, began writing and producing songs together. At 19, Colbie decided to learn to play the acoustic guitar and the three began making what would soon be the tracks to her album Coco. The name of her debut album stems from a childhood nickname that has stuck with her throughout her life.

MySpace Hit

After recording a few songs, Caillat decided to post them to her MySpace page. At first, the songs garnered little interest, but after a few months, Caillat had legions of MySpace fans and became the number one unsigned artist on MySpace. She garnered so much attention that Rolling Stone did a write up on her, highlighting the fact that her songs had received over 14 million plays. Soon, Caillat was signed to Universal Republic records and her album Coco was released in 2007.

About Colbie Caillat Lyrics

Colbie Caillat is probably best known for the simplicity of her lyrics, but that doesn't mean that the singer/songwriter doesn't delve a little deeper than the surface with words. Here's a little comparison of how she succeeds in keeping her lyrics light and fun on some songs and a bit deeper and serious on others:

  • In her song Bubbly she writes: - The rain is falling on my window pane/but we are hiding in a safer place/undercover staying dry and warm/you give me feelings that I adore.

Everyone can relate to lyrics like that because they're cute and fun. Comparing those lyrics to a different song, you can see that Caillat has the ability to go beyond superficiality and catchy hooks.

  • In her song Dreams Collide she writes: - I owned alone this memory/Maybe I shouldn't wake instead/But I'm on my way to go back inside my head. The chorus of the song goes on like this I close my eyes/And try to hide/But wait when these dreams collide.

What's Coming Up for Colbie Caillat

Caillat is still on tour promoting Coco, but already has her eye on her sophomore effort. In an interview, Caillat revealed that she, Jason Reeves, and Mikal Blue have already written and laid down seven new tracks for her next album. Whether or not those tracks will end up on her next CD remains to be seen though because she also revealed that they also have "13 options for the next album" but is in no rush because she has "…another year to keep writing." So fans should expect to have to wait at least another year or two for her next effort. In the meantime, Caillat has teamed up with the likes of Jason Mraz and Taylor Swift, so that should tide fans over for just a bit until her next album is released.
