Christian Soundtracks

Christian soundtracks give you a chance to enjoy the music from your favorite Christian movies at home. The music found on Christian soundtracks encompasses all genres of Christian music, from traditional and gospel to Christian rock, rap and country.

At the end of the 2000s, Christian cinema – or “Godlywood” as some involved in the industry call it – experienced a surge in popularity. Though Christian films have always existed, some high profile successes brought Christian cinema into the mainstream. The Chronicles of Narnia series of films were marketed as mainstream cinema but embraced by Christian cinema fans as one of their own. A success that took everyone by surprise came in 2008 with the release of the independent film Fireproof. The film, which was made by two Georgia brothers who are also preachers on a small budget and starred Kirk Cameron, told the story of a couple trying to save their marriage and finding God along the way. It became the highest grossing independent film of 2008, even beating out Woody Allen’s Vicky Christina Barcelona.

With a few exceptions, notably the Narnia films, Christian movies have traditionally been independently filmed and distributed. Unlike other indie films, they didn’t open in arthouse cinemas but in churches instead. A 2009 deal between major film company Samuel Goldwyn and independent Christian film production company Provident Films aimed to change that. In their comments on the deal, reps from the Samuel Goldwyn Company stated that they believed that the Christian market was underserved by Hollywood and that they planned to try to tap into it.

Christian soundtracks have lagged behind the explosion in popularity of Christian cinema. There has been limited coverage or promotion of Christian movie soundtracks in mainstream media, and in fact, many Christian films do not have soundtracks. The soundtracks that are available are typically either score or feature popular contemporary Christian artists. As the idea of popular Christian music is controversial for some, these attitudes may play a role in the popularity of Christian soundtracks.

The soundtrack to Fireproof is a little unorthodox. The release of an official soundtrack came well after the film had already been out of theaters. It contains mainly score music, with a few tracks from contemporary Christian artists. Before there was an official soundtrack, there was an official iTunes Fireproof mix that you could download in lieu of a soundtrack. As of 2009, both versions are available.

Left Behind tells the stories of the last days of Earth. It was originally a book that was adapted into a TV series and then eventually a movie. The soundtrack features music that is both in the movie and inspired by the movie performed by contemporary Christian artists.

As The Chronicles of Narnia films weren’t strictly created to be Christian films, the accompanying soundtracks are not embraced by everyone interested in Christian music. All installments of the films have a soundtrack. A score appears on each soundtrack, but secular artists, rather than just Christian artists, are featured on the soundtracks.

The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry, a 2009 Christian film marketed as the next big Chrisitian hit after Fireproof, has a CD soundtrack made up of the score of the film. The score was composed by Jasper Randall, who won the award for Best Original Score at the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival in 2009.

Another San Antonio award winner, The Widow’s Might, has a popular, score based soundtrack. This film actually beat successful movie Fireproof out for the Audience Choice award at the film festival.
