Myspace and Music Codes
MySpace began as a website for unknown musicians to distribute their material and spread their name. It quickly evolved into a music, video and information sharing community that has become a cultural phenomenon. MySpace and other similar services use specialized "codes" in order to put music on your personalized page. These codes embed sound files that will be available to any visitor to your site.
What Is a MySpace Music Code?
MySpace.com is one of the world's most popular websites, with over five million members to date. It is a multimedia site that serves as a virtual social network for people. Each member is given his own page, which he can personalize with graphics, blogs, music, and written content about himself. One of the most popular aspects of MySpace is the music available on the site. Independent bands have found the site to be a great place to promote their group and more recently, mainstream bands have followed suit.
What Is a MySpace Music Code Used For?
Music found on MySpace can be added to your personal profile. One of the things that is most appealing about the site is the fact that each person can make her profile unique to her personality. For many, there is a special song that helps to express who they are. For others, they want to post music that they are listening to at the time or consider to be a novelty (such as a TV theme song from the 80's).
Bands can use a MySpace profile to promote their music. The band has an opportunity to upload their original songs onto their site. As the very nature of MySpace is viral, their song can be loaded onto another person's profile who, in turn, will expose many others to the music. This can be a great (and free) marketing tool for independent bands who otherwise wouldn't be getting large exposure.
Recently, as the site has grown in popularity (especially in the younger demographic), celebrities and mainstream music groups have also created MySpace profiles. Fans can use the site to communicate with the artist via e-mail and/or comments. This can often backfire, however, as people will sometimes add themselves to a profile's friend list just so they can leave unkind remarks.
Records
MySpace has released several CDs that compile the most popular bands on the site, such as Fall Out Boy and Weezer. Also, MySpace-sponsored concerts have been held all over America, showcasing big and small bands alike. They also have an arm called MySpace Music that you can use to stream the entire catalog of all of the major record labels for free.
Videos
Music videos, like songs, can be a great marketing tool for bands. Also, they are often used by fans in order to personalize pages and promote the bands they love. With the simple use of HTML, members can cut and paste code into their profile pages, creating the music video on their profile.
