About Carly Simon

Carly Simon, born Carly Elisabeth Simon on June 25, 1945 in New York City, has been making music for decades. Her first dabbling in the music industry came in the 1960s, when she formed a group with her sister Lucy called The Simon Sisters. They enjoyed a minor hit with the song Winkin' Blink' and Nod, but Lucy soon decided that the musician life was not for her and gave up the group to start a family. Carly, on the other hand, pushed forward with her musical aspirations, grabbing every opportunity she could. She did things like perform with Elephant's Memory to appearing in films.

It wasn't until 1971 that her career really took off, with the release of her self-titled debut album. Her songwriting ability and her unique delivery made her an instant favorite. Her follow-up album in 1972, No Secrets, spawned the hit You're So Vain for which Simon is still best known (the song is rumored to be about her ex, Warren Beatty).

The rest of the 1970s was a rush of new albums, an unrelenting touring schedule, and guest appearances on a staggering number of albums. This period was the peak, in terms of musical sales, for Simon.

The 1980s started off with Simon collapsing from exhaustion, and her music career was forever altered. Although sales on her albums had already started to cool, she also had to take a big step back from the hectic touring schedule and rapid output. During the 1980s, Simon became heavily involved in soundtracks and scoring, writing music for movies like Torchlight, Working Girl and Karate Kid II.

In subsequent years, Simon's musical output has slowed even more - though she continues to release records - and she has added other activities to her repertoire, such as writing children's books and composing opera. She still performs occasionally, though in recent years she has said she is not really comfortable doing so, and she owns a shop in Martha's Vineyard called Midnight Farm. In 2008, she signed to the new Starbucks Record to release her first album of original material in eight years, This Kind of Love.

Carly Simon - Personal Life

Carly Simon famously wrote her hit song You're So Vain about Warren Betty, but he is not the only high profile ex in her history. She has been romantically linked to Cat Stevens, Mick Jagger and Kris Kristofferson, and she was married to James Taylor for several years. Though she has two children with Taylor, the two are reportedly not on speaking terms. Her other marriage was to poet James Hart, to whom she was married from 1987 - 2007.
