About Beyonce

Born Beyonce Knowles on Stepember 4, 1981 in Houston, Texas, the music industry was always a part of the singer’s life. Her father was a respected and successful artist manager and her mother was a costume designer and make-up artist. As a child, Beyonce was shy, but she showed an early ability as a performer. Her parents helped her pursue a role in girl group Girls’ Tyme, along with her friends Kelly Rowland and LaTavia Roberson. Girls’ Tyme became relatively well known on the national touring circuit and soon drew the attention of R&B manager Arne Frager. Frager helped Girls’ Tyme land a role on Star Search in the hopes of getting them a record deal, but the girls lost the competition.

Beyonce’s father decided to take over as manager of the group, and added LeToya Luckett. The group became an opening act for touring R&B groups that came through the Houston area, and eventually they landed a record deal with Elektra Records in 1993. After signing that deal, they changed their name to Destiny’s Child.

Destiny’s Child released their first album in 1994 and had a hit with the song No, No, No. However, their career really failed to take off in a big way. It wasn’t until the release of 1999’s The Writing’s On The Wall that the group shot to their superstar status. That album eventually won them a Grammy.

During this same period, tension in the group reached a fever pitch, and there was a very public parting of ways. Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin were brought into the group and Roberson and Luckett were asked to leave. Franklin only lasted four months in Destiny’s Child, and the final line up became Beyonce, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams.

In 2003, Destiny’s Child took a hiatus and Beyonce released her first solo album, Dangerously in Love. Propelled by popular singles like Crazy in Love and Baby Boy, it didn’t take long for Beyonce’s solo work to surpass her popularity with Destiny’s Child.

In 2005, Destiny’s Child parted ways for good, paving the way for Beyonce to focus on her solo career full time. In addition to making several film appearances – notably, Dreamgirls - Beyonce released her second album, B’day, in 2006. She followed in 2008 with I Am…Sasha Fierce, the album that spawned the number one single Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It).
