If I Were a Boy is the second U.S. single from Beyonce's third album, I Am…Sasha Fierce. If I Were a Boy tells a story about a failed relationship from the perspective of a woman, who suggests that if she were a man, she would treat a woman better than her man does her. The narrator suggests that men ultimately are living for themselves without rules because they know that they have a woman at home waiting for them - though in the end, the narrator leaves the man who is neglecting her and says maybe the experience will make him a better man in the future.

As you might imagine, some men (and women) took exception to the gender roles cast in the song. The blogosphere lit up, accusing Beyonce of perpetuating negative stereotypes about genders and the relationships between men and women.

That was the least of the drama for the song, however. If I Were a Boy was actually written by singer songwriter BC Jean. Jean had landed a record deal and had recorded the track for what was to be her debut release, but the deal fell apart. Unbeknownst to Jean, Mathew Knowles – Beyonce’s father and now former manager – heard the song and decided he wanted it for his daughter. Knowles is well known in the industry for underhanded tactics, and Beyonce recorded and released the song without Jean even being informed. She learned that her song had been used when a friend heard it on the radio and let her know. Subsequently, Knowles embarked what is rumored to be a very aggressive campaign to get Jean to relinquish her rights to the song. The case is in court pending and neither party can discuss the details, although Beyonce has spoken of the songs in interviews as though she herself had penned it.
