Canadian band Barenaked Ladies’ career dates back to the early 1990s. The band members are:

In a funny way, the success of the Barenaked Ladies was the result of a series of lucky breaks. First of all, they recorded a demo they called Yellow Tape – initially as a means to apply to the South By Southwest music convention – and then they shopped the demo tape to all of the labels in Canada. They found no takers. But they started selling copies at their shows, and the demo took on a life of its own. The record shops started going directly to the band and asking to stock it. Soon, they had sold a whopping 100,00 copies of the tape – an almost unheard of number of sales at the time by a band direct selling the release themselves without even indie label backing. Yellow Tape was actually the first indie release to reach that number of sales in Canada.

Then, the band got an incredibly lucky shot at some extra promotion. The band was slated to play a New Year’s Eve show in Toronto but was dropped from the line-up when someone in the mayor’s office complained that the band’s name was offensive to women. The Canadian press had a field day with the story, and everyone was talking about the band. The sales of Yellow Tape went through the roof.

Following that, the band released an album called Gordon, which was successful in Canada but didn’t do much to break the band in the US. Despite not really cracking the US market with this release, the band managed to score a performance on Late Night with Conan O’Brien.

During this period, the band also went through some personal strife and some personnel changes. They signed with Nettwerk Music Group for management – they still manage the band today – and Nettwerk helped the band get back on track.

Also during this period, and also despite not having “broken” America yet, the band scored a high profile appearance on Beverly Hills 90210, performing three songs at The Peach Pit After Dark. They also place a song on the soundtrack to Friends, further increasing their exposure.

Finally, in 1998, mainstream success in the US came with the release of Stunt. The band’s popularity actually peaked during this time, but although it has declined somewhat since then, The Barenaked Ladies retains a legion of dedicated fans.
