So, what is all this hub-bub about Ares? Well, Ares Galaxy -- its full name -- is an open source peer-to-peer file sharing program that was developed for Microsoft Windows. In essence, Ares Galaxy works like most other P2P file sharing networks, so it is essentially equivalent to programs like Kazaa, Soulseek, and WinMX.

The Ares Galaxy has a huge library of readily available music downloads spanning all sorts of genres, whether you're mostly interested in 80s goth music or the rap stylings of Ice Cube. If you look hard enough, you might even be able to find some funny alien and Looney Toons tunes too!

The program, which can be downloaded for free here, is said to be reasonably easy to use with speedy searches, effective connections, and even support for the BitTorrent (BT) protocol which seems to be all the rage these days.

One of the biggest hurdles that you will have to overcome when using peer-to-peer music download programs, like Ares Galaxy, is that you may run into legal complications. Some songs that you find in the Ares network fall under the public domain, and as such, are legal to download. Many, however, carry a copyright and as such, they fall into a legally gray area. Ares Free Music Downloads

Ares free music downloads have been available since the middle of 2002. At that time, it operated off of the Gnutella network, but within six months, the developers switched the program to work off of its own network. The peer to peer architecture was firmly put in place right from the beginning, promising speedy downloads because you are connected to multiple sources at the same time. This is at the heart of any P2P program, because if any single "seeder" fails to upload files, others can step into their place to serve up the same files.

One of the major advantages to Ares Galaxy is that the protocol it uses is more difficult to identify that other similar programs, and as a result, it appears to work better in "restricted" networks. For example, if you are currently living in a college dorm, your internet connection may be trapped behind a firewall and other restrictions that make alternative P2P programs unusable.

Interestingly, the Ares software has been expanded to include its own unique chat server, providing registered users with instant messaging capabilities. It clearly won't challenge the dominance of programs like AIM, MSN Messenger, and Yahoo! Messenger, but the Ares chat platform does present a useful alternative.
